“How do we help our trainees learn at the edge of their comfort zone?”
Autonomy is a concept in medical education important for the development of physicians with the goal of full autonomy and unsupervised practice by the end of graduate medical education (GME) training. In order for trainees to gain autonomy, supervisors must make entrustment decisions. Through reviewing this qualitative study, we will take a look at trainees’ experiences with graduated autonomy and discuss how medical educators can help trainees capitalize on experiences that stretch them out of their comfort zone into the “zone of proximal development.”
