Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) represent a major priority for Academic Pediatrics. Journals share great responsibility in ensuring that the principles of DEI are well-reflected in their leadership, operations, peer review, and publication of scholarship. A central strategy in achieving this aim is nurturing the next generation of talented and diverse individuals interested in journal leadership. The Assistant Editor Underrepresented in Medicine Mentorship Program seeks out underrepresented in medicine (URiM) faculty for a 3-year mentored program designed to align with a full-time academic career.
Qualifications
- Candidate must self-identify as URiM
- An emerging scholar in any research area of our journal
- Strong understanding of general research methods
- Experience conducting research with a growing or strong publication record
- Experience as reviewer for journals (including Academic Pediatrics)
General Editorial Responsibilities
- Provide general vision, guidance, and critique for the journal
- Shared responsibility on diversity and inclusion and anti-racism activities of the journal
- Participate in monthly conference calls for editors
- Attend editorial board/editor meeting at PAS
Specific Responsibilities and Mentored Experiences
- Serve as primary editor for submitted manuscripts with mentorship from senior editors:

- Conduct initial review, including identifying manuscripts for rejection without peer review
- Select reviewers and alternate reviewers
- Make the editor’s decision based on the reviews (in collaboration with Associate Editors and the Editor-in-Chief)
- Provide constructive feedback to authors
- Rotate working with different senior editors based on interest areas. Possibilities include:
- Health services, health equity, and quality improvement research
- Systematic reviews
- Education research
- Perspectives on a Pediatric Field
- Medicaid policy commentaries
- Methods and statistical reviews
- Serve as primary author for 1-2 Editors’ commentaries related to DEI in the operation of journals.
Assistant editors may serve as reviewers for other journals but may not serve as an editor for any other medical journals and may not be on editorial boards of other journals if that position involves decision-making for those journals.
