Annual Summary
Annual SIG Meeting at PAS 2019
The SIG meeting occurred on Monday, April 29th and was titled “The Brave New World of Subspecialty Status: Pediatric Hospital Medicine”. With the inclusion of and support from respected members in the field of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, we discussed the nuts and bolts of subspecialty certification and logistics of the board certification exam, hosting a debate about hiring only board-eligible or board-certified faculty, addressing how to support Pediatric Hospital Medicine fellows in scholarly work and concluding with SIG business, including the election results for our newest HM APA SIG Co-Chair. It was a very well attended session with positive reviews with an overall rating of 4.8/5.0
PHM 2019 Annual Meeting, Seattle, WA
PHM 2019 is being sponsored by the AAP and planning is ongoing. We anticipate continued growth of the meeting again this year. Drs. Solan, Shaughnessy, and Andrews participated in the PHM 2019 planning session held immediately after PHM 2018. We all participate in bi-monthly planning calls as well. Drs. Shaughnessy and Andrews will remain on the Planning Committee for PHM 2020 and will be joined by the newest incoming APA PHM SIG Co-Chair, Dr. Francisco Alvarez.
APA Pediatric Hospital Medicine Taskforce
HM SIG Co-Chairs Drs. Shaughnessy and Andrews have recently joined this new taskforce. This task force was created by the APA to help develop a comprehensive and long-term strategy to proactively support the career development of pediatric hospitalists.
The Consortium of Pediatric Hospital Medicine
Consortium of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (CPHM)
CPHM is a group comprised of representatives from the three organizations sponsoring PHM (APA, AAP, and SHM). CPHM seeks to provide a unified home for PHM and its key stakeholders. Dr. Solan (APA SIG Co-Chair) is currently the Chair of CPHM (term Aug 2018-July 2019) and Dr. Erin Shaughnessy (APA SIG Co-Chair) is a member. Dr. Annie Andrews (APA SIG Co-Chair) will rotate on as a member on July 2019 and Dr. Solan will rotate off. CPHM funds 2 Council of Pediatric Subspecialties (CoPS), representatives. Dr. Karen Jerardi is a representative who represents the PHM Fellowship Directors (term 2017-2019) and Dr. JoAnna Leyenaar is the other representative for the larger PHM community (term 2018-2021). The PHM Fellowship Directors will be appointing a new rep this summer with plans to serve a 2-year term. CPHM assisted in selecting society representatives to the Choosing Wisely panel led by Dr. Ricardo Quinonez and supported by SHM. From the APA, we chose 3 members each from those who met desired qualifications (Drs. Michael Tchou, Amanda Schondelmeyer, and Barrett Fromme). SHM and AAP similarly chose 3 reps and utilized the same process. CPHM also funds 2 PHM representatives to serve on the planning committee for the PAS Meeting. Current representatives are Dr. Tamara Simon (term 2017-2020) and Dr. Derek Williams (term 2018-2021). Other activities that the CPHM will be involved in for this coming years is potential development/discussion of PHM specific questions for US News and World Report, re-assessment of how the PHM meetings are planned from year to year and creation of task force to inform additional pediatric-specific survey questions for the Practice Analysis Committee survey created by SHM.
