Annual Report

Co-chairs:
Mary Ann LoFrumento, MD, Morristown Medical Center;
Esther K. Chung, MD, MPH, Thomas Jefferson University and Nemours

SIG purpose/mission:  To share, discuss and determine the best clinical practices for term and late preterm newborns.

Current SIG goals:
1. Bring together newborn nursery directors to share practices in various settings,
2. Discuss the latest recommendations to provide optimal care to newborns,
3. Identify quality improvement and research efforts that benefit newborns.

Annual summary:
At the 2015 PAS meeting, we found that having a Keynote Speaker on a major research topic, a poster session, and a Quality Improvement speaker made up a successful framework for the annual SIG meeting.  We also continued the conversation about having some members of our SIG collaborate to work on a paper.

As Co-Chairs, Mary Ann and I met monthly with a break during the summer months.  We followed the discussions on our listserve, which covered topics ranging from circumcision to sepsis. Below is a figure that demonstrates the number of e-mails and the number of topics discussed by month.

To plan for the May meeting, we gathered ideas for topics and speakers from our membership. The Keynote speaker, Dr. Richard Polin, gave a well researched and polished presentation on neonatal hypoglycemia.  The QI speakers, Drs. Alison Holmes and Bonny Whalen, gave an excellent talk on their work related to Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.  The SIG was well attended with over 60 people in attendance.  The poster session was so engaging that it was challenging to get everyone to interrupt their conversations to resume the meeting! The meeting ended by welcoming our new Co-Chair, Dr. Jaspreet Loyal, and thanking our outgoing Co-Chair, Dr. Esther Chung.

Other groups that work in your area of interest: (i.e. for med student education, this might include COMSEP, etc.) -- Neonatologists, some attend in newborn nurseries; Hospitalists - SHM; Educators with COMSEP.

October 2016 Newsletter Article

Our SIG members have been actively engaged in discussing topics of interest on the Newborn Nursery Directors listserv. Recent topics have included
*         Hospital discharge planning and co-ordination of care of infants born to mothers who are incarcerated.
*         Drug screening using umbilical cord specimens.
*         The evidence (or lack thereof) of keeping babies NPO before circumcision.
*         Use of dextrose gel for newborn hypoglycemia.

Please consider joining our SIG to learn more about these topics and more.

We are working on an exciting agenda for our Nursery SIG meeting next year at PAS, more to come!
