APA Region IV Meeting
February 9-10, 2019
Omni Charlottesville Hotel
Charlottesville, VA

Meeting Agenda

Dear Region IV members,

Thank you to everyone who came to Charlottesville in February for another successful regional meeting! We are thrilled to announce that we set another attendance record, surpassing 100 attendees for the first time! We are also proud to report that because of the number of high quality abstracts submitted this year, we were able to increase the number of presentations to 15 platforms and 39 posters. Our region’s own Rachel Moon, who is currently the Division Head of General Pediatrics at UVA and the Chair of the AAP Task Force on SIDS, gave a lively and informative Keynote Speech entitled "AAP Task Force on SIDS: Birth of a Policy Statement (aka policy statement = controversy)", on the process of writing a policy statement and navigating the inevitable criticism that follows. This year we were also fortunate to have a National APA update from Mary Ottolini, who discussed the national priorities of the organization, and an AAP update by Karen Remley, CEO of the AAP, who discussed the work the Academy is doing in Washington DC and what we can do to advocate for our patients on a national level. Attendees again enjoyed a Meet the Professor Breakfast, which offered a variety of mentoring opportunities in small groups, and a Speed Mentoring session. New this year was the opportunity to do manuscript review instead of Speed Mentoring, an option that was popular among fellows and junior faculty. Finally we were honored to announce the creation of the Greenberg-Serwint Award for Outstanding Leadership in Medical Education, the first recipients of which were Dr. Larrie Greenberg and Dr. Janet Serwint, after whom the award was named.

Special thanks to the meeting planning committee, speakers, and Breakfast and Speed mentors for your contributions to the meeting. We look forward to seeing everyone, and hearing about the amazing research you are doing next year. We hope you will all return to Charlottesville and bring your friends and colleagues along!

And now for the round of applause:
